The bugs they couldn't kill

Article Abstract:

Some old diseases are re-emerging because of antibiotic resistance, but strategies to fight back against the resistant bacteria do exist. The main reason for the development of resistant bacteria is overuse or misuse of antibiotics, so programmes to combat these practices, combined with a new World Health Organisation programme of surveillance on global patterns of resistance, present the possibility of progress. Information on the re-emergence of cholera, tuberculosis and typhoid is included.
