The care programme approach: a patient perspective

Article Abstract:

UK health authorities have used the care programme approach (CPA) since 1991, when it was introduced to help with the provision of patient care packages regarding mental health. A care plan is drawn up by the patient and carer to ensure both understand the importance of compliance and advisory services on offer. A study to assess the value of CPA found patients were often not aware of CPA or its terminology. Better care was reported by 12% of patients involved in the study, while 58% reported no perceivable change in their care.

Fitness to practise in community mental health

Article Abstract:

New UK community mental health nurses need to receive more training in the practicalities of the profession, according to nursing managers who were surveyed by the Sainsbury Centre for Mental Health in 1999. A large proportion of managers questioned raised concerns about the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical skills demonstrated by new nurses, suggesting training programmes should be altered to introduce a higher degree of relevant skills learning.

Telling it like it is

Article Abstract:

People who have had extensive experience of mental health services can sometimes play a vital role in training and supporting nursing staff who work in this area. They often do not find it easy to talk about their experiences, but can benefit from receiving regular support. They are able to give an insight into the views of people with learning disabilities, and find that students benefit from getting to know them personally.
