The Etiology of Genital Ulcer Disease by Multiplex Polymerase Chain Reaction and Relationship to HIV Infection Among Patients Attending Sexually Transmitted Disease Clinics in Pune, India

Article Abstract:

Genital ulcer disease in India is commonly associated with HIV infection and herpes, and clinical and laboratory tests are not sufficiently accurate for determining the cause of the ulcers. Researchers tested 300 patients with genital ulcers, and found that 22% had HIV, 26% had herpes simplex, 23% had Hemophilus ducreyi infection, and 10% were infected with Treponema pallidum. HIV was twice as prevalent among patients with herpes. Genital examinations and laboratory tests for sexually transmitted diseases were only moderately accurate in identifying the causes of the genital ulcers, compared to DNA testing.
