The connection delivery model: care across the continuum

Article Abstract:

Cross-training hospital nurses to provide home care for discharged hospital patients may lead to a decrease in readmissions. One hospital decided to cross-train nurses to provide home care rather than downsize its nursing staff. When the hospital census was low, inpatient staff nurses could work in home care rather than take leave. Readmissions of congestive heart failure patients significantly decreased after nurses were cross-trained to care for these patients at home after discharge.

I.V. regulation device vs. infusion pump: a cost-savings study

Article Abstract:

Nurses who changed their patterns of intravenous infusion pump usage were able to create a potential savings of between $300,000 and $400,000 annually. A study at a teaching hospital showed nurses tended to use infusion pumps more out of convenience than clinical need. Once costs for infusion pump use were analyzed, the hospital identified instances where nurses could use a manually-regulated intravenous device. Infusion pumps were still used when advised by policy or clinical need.

Cross-training: meeting staffing needs in the ICU

Article Abstract:

Nurses cross-trained to serve different intensive care units experienced less mandatory time off and job stress, and increased their marketability. A 3-week program including self-learning modules and clinical experience allowed nurses to serve in either the neuroscience or Neuro Critical Care units. Nurses who completed the cross-training program were able to function independently in the neurological units.
