The consequences for food safety of the use of fluoroquinolones in food animals

Article Abstract:

Doctors and veterinarians both have a responsibility to prevent the spread of antibiotic-resistant campylobacter. Campylobacter is a common cause of diarrhea. A 1999 report linked an increase in antibiotic-resistant campylobacter infections in humans between 1992 and 1998 to the use of fluoroquinolone antibiotics in poultry, which began in 1995. Many chickens tested positive for fluoroquinolone-resistant campylobacter. The unnecessary use of fluoroquinolones to treat campylobacter infections was also linked to the increase. Patients with resistant campylobacter had diarrhea longer than those infected with susceptible bacteria. This indicates that the use of antibiotics in food animals has a direct impact on public health.
