The core of nursing

Article Abstract:

The Center for Human Caring, Colorado University emphasises caring in nursing practice. Science alone is insufficient for healing. Center Director, Jean Watson has promoted research and projects to promote caring attitudes. The Denver Nursing Project in Human Caring has been established as a reaction against traditional hospital care for HIV patients and offers support to patients and relatives. Similar centres are planned in other clinical fields.

Empowering parents of children with special needs

Article Abstract:

The relationships between health professionals and the parents of children with special needs have become more participative and empowering towards the latter. Features of such an empowering relationship include sensitivity to parents' right of choice, encouragement of their sense of control and sensitivity to individuality of each family. It is questioned whether parents actually achieve such empowerment and good practice models are investigated.
