The cost of HIPAA compliance

Article Abstract:

Most hospitals and medical offices had to spend money to become compliant with HIPAA regulations covering the privacy of patients' health information but the cost has been less than anticipated. This is probably because most hospitals used existing personnel to do the job rather than hiring outside consultants. HIPAA covers not only the information in medical records but also any conversations that patients have with any health care provider.

HIPAA regulations -- a new era of medical-record privacy?

Article Abstract:

A basic summary of the HIPAA regulations covering medical records is provided for doctors who will have to comply with these regulations by April 14, 2003. These regulations were adopted to protect the privacy of patients' medical records. However, they are unnecessarily complex and seem more likely to make it easier for governments and businesses to get health information rather than protecting patients' privacy.

DNA testing, banking, and genetic privacy

Article Abstract:

DNA analysis, in combination with the Internet, creates an unregulated market in DNA and opportunities for invasion of genetic privacy. DNA banking for research demonstrates that DNA donors shouldn't assume that the privacy protection they take for granted in medical care and clinical researches apply.
