The cost of infertility

Article Abstract:

Many issues have been raised about in vitro fertilisation (IVF), such as the sale of eggs, cloning, selective abortion, who should pay for the treatment and the age of prospective mothers. The Committee of Enquiry into Human Fertilisation and Embryology looks at many issues surrounding IVF but there is still considerable debate about the ethics of the procedures. Only 21% of health authorities have a policy of providing funds for IVF treatment and it is estimated that 90% of IVF conceptions are paid for privately.

The mother of all questions

Article Abstract:

There is little provision of new reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) through the National Health Service in the UK, and this has prompted the creation of many private fertility clinics. It now appears that new reproductive technologies are closely linked with commercialization and consumerism. However, IVF may be the only chance for some women to have a baby, and it can be hard for them not to go ahead with IVF treatment when the social norm is to have children.

Speaking out

Article Abstract:

The 1999 European 'Foods for Special Medical Purposes' directive is not in line with the UK government's promotion on breast feeding. The directive includes special food for sick adults and also baby milk formulas. This will give manufacturers of baby milk an additional marketing opportunity as they will be able publicize their products via health professionals.
