More safe, less sorry

Article Abstract:

A project at the Royal Hull Hospitals NHS Trust illustrates the potential for using Accident and Emergency (A&E) department nurses in a health promotion role. The trust appointed a registered nurse in 1993 to develop a health promotion programme as part of the A&E function. The nurse has developed partnerships with other bodies in the public, private and voluntary sectors. A&E departments can supply statistics on accidents to promote initiatives for accident prevention. They can also provide data about accidents to empower vulnerable sections of the community.

Mines of information

Article Abstract:

Patient involvement in the compilation of a self-help guide about urinary incontinence is vital. However, patient involvement is not always as easy to organize as health workers may imagine. The fact that the guide is about depression and lowered self-esteem related to women's incontinence means there are likely to be specific difficulties with finding willing contributors. However, more general problems include patients' unwillingness to label themselves. Techniques to promote involvement include individual interviews and patient empowerment.

The psychology of health promotion

Article Abstract:

Health promotion involves careful consideration of epidemiological data and requires understanding of why individual accept or ignore health advice. An illness may have many risk factors and the health promoter has to examine any data carefully to ensure that they are not basing recommendations on wrong interpretations. Reasons why individuals ignore health promotion advice include confusion connected with changing trends in advice, and resentment related to the manner in which advice is given.
