The devil's in the detail

Article Abstract:

A consultative document looking at health and the prevention of illness, in England, fails to consider occupational diseases and accidents. The document sets out targets for the reduction of illness, such as a 20% cut in the incidence of cancer. Targets for the reduction of workplace accidents and illnesses would be welcomed. The document considers a varity of causes of disease, such as environmental factors, inadequate diets and poverty. The relationship between improvement in the health of the population and better occupation health and safety procedures has not been fully addressed.

Asbestos - confusion in protection

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom health and safety legislation should make it compulsory for asbestos workers to wear adequate respiratory protection equipment. Around 25% of the 3,000 annual deaths, due to asbestos, are people who worked in the construction and related industries. Some experts point out low level exposure is now thought to be sufficient to cause asbestos related cancers. It can take 15-60 years for an asbestos related disease to appear following first contact with the material. The use of white chrysotile asbestos has not been banned, in the UK, unlike crocidolite and amosite asbestos.
