The diet and body weight of British teenage smokers at 16-17 years

Article Abstract:

Significant differences were noted in the diets of teenage smokers, particularly girls, and those of non-smokers. In particular, teenage smokers had lower intakes of antioxidant nutrients, fruits, vegetables and cereals. They also had a higher consumption of alcohol and lower intake of fiber, thiamin and vitamin C. Male smokers had higher fat consumption, while regular and occasional female smokers ate less protein and calcium. Regular smokers also consumed less zinc, selenium, riboflavin, carotene and folates and iodine. No relationship was found between smoking and body size.

This research also assessed the dependence of these reference values on age and gender. Waist circumference showed higher values in boys than in girls, particular after 11.5 years. Waist values rise with age in both males and females.
