The dilemma of Medicaid

Article Abstract:

The future of the Medicaid program in an era of widespread state budget deficits is reviewed. Medicaid is now one of the largest state expenditures and most states are required to pass a balanced budget every year. Most states have experienced a drop in revenues since 2000, and many legislators are reluctant to raise taxes. About 51 million Americans rely on Medicaid and would be unable to afford medical care without it.

Medicare and drug pricing

Article Abstract:

The Bush Administration has proposed changes to the Medicare program that will probably affect how Medicare pays for drugs provided on an outpatient basis. As of 2003, Medicare pays for 450 outpatient drugs, but 35 cancer drugs account for most of the expense. Medicare tends to overpay for drugs but to underpay for other services. That may change in the future.
