The disease of deceit

Article Abstract:

People who intentionally make themselves ill so as to receive medical attention are classified as suffering from Munchausen's syndrome. The sufferers have often had abusive childhoods, leading to an inability to cope as adults. Women sufferers usually have a knowledge of medical procedures which allows them to mimic medical conditions. Munchausen's syndrome by proxy usually occurs when a mother intentionally makes her child ill so as to receive medical attention for both the child and herself. Attacks are usually carried out on children under the age of 20 months, with 55 cases reported in the UK during 1996.

Well women

Article Abstract:

A number of women's health issues received wide media coverage in the United Kingdom in 1996, including breast-feeding, breast cancer, fertility, surrogacy and cervical screening, but a number of women's health services still remain threatened by a lack of resources. The Dept. of Health is seeking to improve the cervical screening service following a series of mistakes made such as the misreading of results. Death rates from breast cancer fell by 10% in 1996 from 1989 in the UK, partly due to the growing awareness of the disease among women.

Abortion by postcode

Article Abstract:

Some UK area health authorities are using judgemental criteria to restrict access to abortions. Whilst in Scotland nearly all abortions are funded by the National Health Service (NHS), in Solihull, England, just 45% of abortions in 1998 were NHS-funded. A number of other UK areas funded under 60% of abortions. Factors relating to NHS abortion provision include already having had one or two abortions, the financial position of patients, contraception and age.
