Jill of all trades?

Article Abstract:

The role of nursing in primary health care can be best advanced by making the profession less hierarchical and less focused on job titles, while nurses should be prepared to continuously update their knowledge and skills and understand their limitations. A patient-focused framework of practice has been developed by the Queen's Nursing Institute in which nurses are encouraged to meet the highest standards in applying their knowledge. Patients need to be reassured that their health care needs are being met as they can be confused by the large number of different job titles among nursing staff.

Life can be tough for the inbetweenies

Article Abstract:

The role of nurses is changing and some nurse professionals are undertaking work previously carried out by doctors, which can be confusing for both patients and other medical staff. Some nurses surveyed complained of isolation and stress, although they also found their work stimulating and enjoyable. Appropriate frameworks need to be established to successfully manage the changing professional roles of nurses, with trusts frequently perceiving the management and planning of medical work and nursing as completely disparate issues.

Wise councils

Article Abstract:

Plans to introduce a legislative council to oversee standards within the nursing and midwifery professions have been welcomed in the UK. The Nursing and Midwifery Council will be made up of one midwife, nurse and health visitor from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales, although the membership structure has been criticised for failing to take into account service variations between rural and city regions. It is hoped the new council will help raise standards within the profession through support and regulation.
