Russian revolution

Article Abstract:

Russia is keen to emulate the British system of health service provision, which is perceived as less costly and more effective than the US model. A number of Russian Members of Parliament visited a day surgery in London, England, to study the way in which trusts operate and to examine the British purchaser-provider system. Russian surgeons who had previously considered day surgeries to be dangerous were persuaded to think otherwise after observing the British system. Some Russian MPs believe the existing Russian system of medical insurance is failing.

Life after birth

Article Abstract:

Midwives can play an important role in helping prospective parents adjust to the psychological changes that come with having a child, according to a report from the UK Royal College of Midwives. At present, midwives tend to focus on hospital procedures and what could happen during labour, and give relatively little attention to the psychological and emotional changes that can take place after childbirth. Many prospective mothers and fathers do not really think beyond the actual birth of their child.

From here to maternity: Many hospital managers dread their nurses taking maternity leave. But it doesn't have to be a nightmare

Article Abstract:

A large proportion of the women employed by the NHS are nurses, and dealing with maternity leave is a major problem for managers. The NHS maternity leave schemes consist of 18 weeks' paid leave and up to 52 weeks's unpaid leave. Ealing Hospital operates a maternity pool consisting of a 50,000 pounds fund which is distributed to managers to allow them to plan properly. The RCN believes that such a scheme is enlightened and is keen to promote it and similar schemes.
