The distribution and mortality impact of chronic energy deficiency among adult Nigerian men and women

Article Abstract:

Malnutrition and chronic energy deficiency are becoming significant problems among adults in Nigeria, even though this country has extensive natural resources. The main factors believed to be the cause of falling calorie intake among Nigerians include the structural adjustment programme introduced in 1986. It is clear that there is an urgent need to establish national programmes to deal with the problems of insufficient food production and distribution.

Criteria for valid nitrogen balance measurement of protein requirements

Article Abstract:

Steps in eliminating the sources of error in nitrogen balance measurements are presented. Energy intakes should satisfy the individual's usual diet and activity level. An adjustment period must take place before measurement. Protein and fluid intake need to be closely monitored and controlled. The reliability and consistency of nitrogen balance measurements are important because man's protein requirement estimates depend entirely on such measurements.

Energy requirements: general principles

Article Abstract:

In an ideal state, a person's energy requirement is equal to his energy expenditure. However, when improved nutritional status is desired, energy may be raised higher than energy expenditure. Conversely, when weight loss is sought in obese persons, energy requirement is lowered than energy expenditure. Energy requirements can only be determined by measuring energy expenditure, the direct techniques of which are detailed.
