The effect of a low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet on serum high density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride

Article Abstract:

A major public health objective in many developed countries is reduction of serum cholesterol concentrations, associated with coronary heart disease. A new study investigates the effects of low- and high-saturated fat diets on blood lipids, fatty acids and lipoproteins and determines whether a high-carbohydrate diet has any adverse effects on serum high density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides in individuals. It is shown that individuals who adopt a fibre rich high-carbohydrate can lose weight and reduce both total and low density lipoprotein cholesterol, with little effect on high density lipoprotein cholesterol or tryglyceride.

Lifestyle intervention in people with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM)

Article Abstract:

The effect of intensive lifestyle education on dietary practices, exercise and metabolic measurements in people afflicted with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) was investigated. Results revealed that a lifestyle program for people with IDDM will give rise to changes in diet and exercise habits. In turn, these will improve their measures of glycemic control and lipoprotein mediated risk of coronary heart disease, regardless of changes in insulin regime. These suggest that greater beneficial changes are in store for people with IDDM who will undertake innovative lifestyle changes.
