The effect of thigh-length support stockings in the hemodynamic response to ambulation in pregnancy

Article Abstract:

Support stockings may improve circulation when worn by pregnant women. Researchers used thoracic electrical bioimpedance to measure the cardiovascular response of 18 pregnant women before and after wearing thigh-length support stockings for one week. The use of support stockings was associated with a significant increase in arterial pressure and stroke strength of the heart. Vascular resistance was higher, as reflected by lower catecholamine levels. Stockings with moderate compression at the ankles are sufficient to prevent blood from pooling in the lower legs while being fairly comfortable to put on and wear.

Maternal deaths in an urban perinatal network, 1992-1998

Article Abstract:

More than one-third of all maternal deaths from pregnancy could be prevented, according to a study of 131,500 births. Forty percent of the 42 maternal deaths were caused by heart disease or pulmonary embolism. Pulmonary embolism occurs when a blood clot forms in the body and travels to the lungs.

Idiopathic polyhydramnios and perinatal outcome

Article Abstract:

Polyhydramnios does not appear to lead to adverse outcomes such as premature birth, low birth weight, or infant death. This was the conclusion of a study of 151 pregnant women. Polyhydramnios occurs when there is too much amniotic fluid.
