The effects of monounsaturated-fat enriched diet and polyunsaturated-fat enriched diet on lipid and glucose metabolism in subjects with impaired glucose tolerance

Article Abstract:

High-fat monounsaturated-fat enriched (Mono) diet improve both lipid and glucose metabolism in subjects with impaired glucose tolerance following a three week Run-in diet. The positive effect of reduced-fat polyunsaturated-fat enriched (Poly) diet on metabolism is limited to lipid profile only. Glucose tolerance increases after the intake of the Mono-diet as shown by an increase in glucose effectiveness measure. Poly- and Mono-diet differ only insignificantly in their effect on lipid metabolism.

Monounsaturated oils do not all have the same effect on plasma cholesterol

Article Abstract:

Research performed on oils rich in monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) confirms results from previous studies that not all oils have the same effect on plasma cholesterol. MUFA-rich oleic acid, as opposed to polyunsaturated linoleic acid, is considered neutral and more cholesterol-lowering. This can be attributed to the content of some fatty acids and the non-saponifiable fractions of the various monounsaturated oils.
