The effects of threat appraisal

Article Abstract:

The perceived threats of staff nurses are the expected ones of on-the-job errors, injuries, productivity and poor quality indicators. A study of 26 female staff nurses to investigate the relationship between the degree of perceived threat and negatively-toned emotions showed a significant relationhip. Such perceptions were influenced by employment-related factors including communication between people in the work environment, lack of respect by management and physicians, and changes in the work environment. Proactive rather than reactive employee assistance programs might help staff nurses' coping mechanisms.

Organizational Restructuring and the Psychologic Contract

Stress produced by organizational change can be alleviated through management-employee group sessions to discuss concerns. Independent counselors can conduct these sessions, and help coordinate communication between employers and workers. Session content should focus on employee feelings, so that the organizational restructuring can be presented in a manner that answers questions and allays fears.
