The elusive Reed-Sternberg cell

Article Abstract:

Hodgkin's disease was the first of the malignant lymphomas to be described but it remains a source of many unanswered questions. One enigma has been the lack of Reed-Sternberg cells and their variants in comparison to the large numbers of normal inflammatory cells. The question that this raises is whether Hodgkin's question is infectious or neoplastic. The origin of the Reed-Sternberg cell has been the subject of much controversy. Recent evidence shows stronger support for the notion that these cells originate from B cells, lymphocytes active in the body's immune response to disease.

Immunologic analysis of a spinal cord-biopsy specimen from a patient with human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I-associated neurologic disease

Article Abstract:

Myelopathy resulting from infection with the human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) may occur through an immune reaction against the virus. Researchers studied biopsy specimens from the spinal cord of a 45-year-old woman who developed progressive weakness in the legs. Magnetic resonance imaging had revealed lesions in her brain and spinal cord and also that the spinal cord had atrophied. She tested positive for HTLV-I. The biopsy specimen had been infiltrated by CD8+ T cells, which were shown to be activated against HTLV-I.

Neonatal diagnosis and treatment of Menkes disease

Article Abstract:

A study to examine if neonatal diagnosis of Menkes disease, a fatal degenerative disorder in infancy and treatment with copper injections can help prevent fatalities is conducted. Results confirm the hypothesis showing neurochemical profiles to have high sensitivity and specificity for detecting disease.
