Perinatal hospice

Article Abstract:

A model of perinatal hospice is described for parents of a fetus with a lethal abnormality who do not want to have an abortion. These programs would be managed by a multidisciplinary team encompassing prenatal diagnosis, perinatal grief counseling, and hospice care.

The fetoplacental pressor effects of low-dose acetylsalicylic acid and angiotensin II in the ex vivo cotyledon model

Article Abstract:

Low doses of aspirin during pregnancy may help to prevent preeclampsia. This complication results from blood vessel constriction and can cause decreased blood flow in the placenta. Two portions of the placenta called cotyledons from each of 12 placentas were treated with acetylsalicylic acid reflecting a low maternal dose of aspirin, or normal saline. Perfusion pressures were used to measure blood vessel constriction in response to angiotensin II. Pressures rose 93% in the untreated cotyledons compared with 58% in those treated, indicating a decreased vasoconstriction response.

Intracranial cavernous angioma initially presenting in pregnancy with new-onset seizures

Article Abstract:

A 35-year-old pregnant woman developed sudden headaches and seizures at 24 weeks gestation. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a cavernous angioma in the brain, a rare vascular malformation that often produces no symptoms. The tumor was not amenable to surgical correction, and the patient was treated with phenytoin to control the seizures. She delivered normal twins, and remains seizure-free with drug therapy.
