The future of clinical communication in an electronic environment

Article Abstract:

The Internet can be used to facilitate education and support by linking nurses with patients in their homes and family caregivers. Two research projects involving 57 AIDS patients and 102 family caregivers of Alzheimer's patients are described. In both cases the participants were given computers and private access to a nurse-moderated bulletin board, an information module, and a module to guide decision making. The participants particularly valued the opportunity for peer support.

Helping say goodbye: merging clinical scholarship with community service

Article Abstract:

One use of clinical scholarship is a committment to community service. Two nursing faculty members used their knowledge of the special issues of grieving a perinatal loss and their administrative and organizational skills to start and run a peer support group for parents experiencing such a loss. Their caring efforts have helped grieving parents heal by providing them with information, guidance, understanding, an opportunity for catharsis, and the benefits of mutual support.
