The gentle touch

Article Abstract:

Nurses are using aromatherapy, applying oils to reflex points to relieve the stress, misery or pain of the terminally or gravely ill, bringing about a feeling of well-being. Relatives are also encouraged to help with the therapy. Patients and those involved in applying therapies, such as aromatherapy, hypnotherapy, shiatsu, reflexology, massage and acupuncture, find they can bring out strong emotions for both parties. There should be more research into the effect of complementary therapies, and proof of their advantages is being sought by the medical profession.

Troubled waters

Article Abstract:

Shetland islanders are worried about health risks from the Braer tanker oil spill and spraying of dispersants. Confusion exists because of lack of information. Inhabitants have complained of sore throats, sickness and skin ailments. Medical experts will monitor health problems to assess effects on health although official sources maintain risks from pollutants are low. However, Norwegian environment association, Bellona maintains chemical Dispolene 34S may have been used in the dispersant.

Doling out misery

Article Abstract:

An Office of Health economics report 'Compendium of Health Statistics' has established a link between unemployment and health problems. Areas of high unemployment have a corresponding high rate of prescriptions per head of population. The cost to the health service and subsequent costs in social security benefit could be more profitably spent on job creation. More funds should be allocated to community health care as primary care is more cost effective than hospital care.
