The silent epidemic

Article Abstract:

The National Osteoporosis Society (NOS) campaign to increase professional awareness of prevention and treatment of osteoporosis will commence January 1993. The campaign aims to help professionals identify potential victims. Screening is an option although only 70 bone scanners are available in the United Kingdom. The NOS recommends hormone replacement therapy and calcium supplements to improve bone mass. Increasing exercise and giving up smoking and alcohol have a beneficial effect. Physiotherapy and hydrotherapy are the most suitable treatments for fractures.

Research priorities

Article Abstract:

Some doubts have been expressed about the Department of Health's new research task force for nursing, midwifery and health visiting. Nurses are in favour of the concept of placing more emphasis on research work, and approve of the group's aim of establishing a programme for research which will be based on work already being undertaken in the health service. However, the group does not include any ordinary nurse practitioners, and is not tackling the current problem of lack of support for existing research.

Risky business?

Article Abstract:

UK nurses are being asked to take on new roles but this can give rise to a number of problems. Accountability may not always be clearly understood, according to research carried out at Bristol University, England. Nurses need guidelines and a code of conduct to help minimize risks to patients and risks to the nurses themselves which could include legal risks. Innovation can be carried out more easily if the problems involved are tackled, the researchers argue.
