The hidden parasite

Article Abstract:

Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic infection during pregnancy that causes birth defects or even stillbirth in around 600 births annually in the United Kingdom. Although the infection can be easily detected and treated, a national blood testing program is not available. The parasite that causes toxoplasmosis is found in uncooked or undercooked food, soil that contains cat faeces, and unpasteurised goat's milk. Symptoms resemble influenza; it also may lay dormant before going on to cause irreparable damage to the eyesight.

Guide sparks fears of 'safety net' staffing

Article Abstract:

The NHS Executive's new guidelines for children's health have received a cautious welcome from health visitor representatives, but concerns about the plans have also been expressed. There is particular concern that the guidelines could be used by purchases to justify a reducing in school nursing to an absolute minimum. Under the guidelines, purchasers are advised to look at the health requirements of their school and assess the best approach to provision.
