The impact of power in therapeutic relationships

Article Abstract:

It is essential that health care professionals understand the impact of power on their relationships with each other and with their patients. Such an understanding is important if a mutually beneficial bond is to be established. In a rigid health care system, carers who try to empower their clients can find that it creates hostility elsewhere. One solution to such problems is to agree a definite but informal care plan with clients, to establish responsibilities and to encourage patients to take an active part in their own care.

Precautions and high risk patients

Article Abstract:

A study into the introduction of precautions to help protect staff against blood-borne viruses revealed that the majority of respondents thought it was important to identify high-risk patients. Two thirds of those questioned thought that risk of exposure to such viruses would be reduced with the implementation of universal precautions. Some 60% of respondents said that knowing that a patient was HIV or hepatitis B positive would make them change their clinical practice.
