The impact of the use of the isolated echogenic intracardiac focus as a screen for Down syndrome in women under the age of 35 years

Article Abstract:

A heart abnormality seen on an ultrasound scan called the isolated echogenic intracardiac focus should not be used to screen pregnant women for Down syndrome. If it was used for this purpose, it would lead to 485 amniocentesis procedures that would cause three miscarriages for every one case of Down syndrome identified.
