The intensive care experience

Article Abstract:

Intensive Care Unit treatment of a Guillain-Barre syndrome patient without sedation in Leicester Royal Infirmary, England has enabled assessment of the quality of nursing care. The patient indicated five valued and five upsetting nursing practices. The patient considered staff personal attention and reassurance the most positive aspects of treatment. Boredom was the most negative feature. The patient's priority of emotional care was distinct from the nursing staff's priority of physical care.

Night on the tiles

Article Abstract:

Talking over the days events with colleagues helps most intensive care nurses to come to terms with stress caused by the nature of the role. Intensive care nursing involves caring for critically ill patients whose lifes totally depend on the expertise of nursing staff. The whole unit must act together to ensure the highest quality care. Nurses deal with death on a daily basis but are also rewarded by the recovery of extremely sick patients.
