The legacy of Allitt

Article Abstract:

An episode of mental illness may jeopardies the career prospects of UK nurses due to the increased vigilance of recruitment managers in the wake of the nurse Beverly Allitt case. Beverly Allitt was found to be suffering from Munchausen's syndrome by proxy after she killed and attempted to kill several children she was caring for. Patient safety is the most important factor when considering hiring a nurse who has a history of mental illness, although recruitment managers should try not to be too judgemental when assessing the level of acceptable risk involved.

Are ward leaders powerful advocates in a clinical setting?

Article Abstract:

Two opposing points of view concerning the advocacy role of ward leaders are presented. One argument put forward is that the ward leader is an effective advocate for nurses whereas the other argument cites examples of medical scandals where poor performance went unreported.
