The neurological illness of Eugene O'Neill -- a clinicopathological report

Article Abstract:

One of the doctors who performed the autopsy on Eugene O'Neill has received permission from the playwright's grandchildren to release the details of the autopsy. O'Neill died in 1953 from a neurodegenerative disease. The autopsy confirms that O'Neill did not have Parkinson's disease, as is commonly assumed. A detailed history of his illness is given, and the autopsy of his brain showed progressive atrophy of his cerebellum. It appeared to be similar to alcoholic cerebellar degeneration, but in this case, it was not due to alcohol or any genetic abnormality.

Hostile use of the life sciences

Article Abstract:

The 'dual use' dilemma inherent in every scientific discovery led the National Research Council to acknowledge the risk that dangerous agents used in research could be stolen or diverted for malevolent purposes and research results could facilitate the creation of entirely new classes of threat agents. The study recommended steering clear of major research restrictions and instead creating a new level of federal review for proposed experiments that pose particularly biosecurity risks.

Memory dysfunction

Article Abstract:

The four memory systems that are of clinical relevance such as episodic memory, semantic memory, procedural memory and working memory are discussed. The understanding of memory from the point of view of functional neuroimaging and studies of patients with brain insults, which should aid clinicians in the diagnosis and treatment of the memory disorders of their patients, is summarized.
