Children in front of the bars

Article Abstract:

Little research has been done on the effects of parental incarceration on children, although such a situation can have negative effects on their social and psychological development. Important variables include the kind of crime the parent is accused of and the manner of the arrest. In 1993, a counselling project was established in the Netherlands for prisoners' children. The project included matching up the children with mentors outside. Children who benefitted from the program were allowed a visit with the incarcerated parent. The project sought to improve such children's isolated social position and to provide them with positive role models.

Agnieszka Holland's 'Total Eclipse,' a contemporary "film maudit."

Article Abstract:

The negative reception in the US of 'Total Eclipse' directed by Agnieszka Holland is related to the film's deviation from contemporary trends in gay cultural politics and audience tastes. In the US, movies about homosexuality have become rather mainstream and tame, while 'Total Eclipse' represents a more transgressive tradition in gay cinema. The film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and David Thewlis, depicts the relationship between the French poets Arthur Rimbaud and Paul Verlaine.
