The nursing intervention lexicon and taxonomy: implications for representing nursing care data in automated patient records

Article Abstract:

A holistic nursing taxonomy has been developed that is being used to describe the activities of home care nursing. The Nursing Intervention Lexicon and Taxonomy (NILT) was developed by analyzing nurses' natural language descriptions of their care. The NILT sorts activities according to seven categories: determining need for care, physical monitoring, performing therapeutic procedures, providing psychological support, enabling family decision making and self-care, arranging for care, and teaching or providing information.
