The pitfalls of practice nursing

Article Abstract:

Medical risk management involves identifying the most common areas of practice failure to ensure procedures are set up to prevent problems occurring. About 50% of all medical negligence claims involved commonly practiced nursing procedures. Ear syringing accounted for 19% of all claims settled by the Medical Defence Union from 1993 to 1998, while injections accounted for 22% of claims. Poor technique was found to be the most common reason for nursing staff failing to carry out ear syringes properly, with too much pressure and faulty equipment also being cited.

Bowel management and nursing's hidden work

Article Abstract:

The nurses role in helping patients to manage bowel function is important but is often hidden from public view and the type of work is often undervalued and ignored. Nurses have a challenge to change what is often seen as unclean work, into something significant at individual and organisational levels.
