The reluctant patient

Article Abstract:

The community nurse must proceed with great sensitivity when caring for someone who is very unwilling to receive treatment. In such cases, it can take some time to establish treatment parameters, and it may take several visits before a full assessment can be made. The patient may have a great fear of possibly having to go to hospital for treatment, and the community nurse must therefore be extremely supportive. It is important that patient is allowed to remain in control of the treatment process.

Make love, not warfarin

Article Abstract:

The work of the anticoagulation management clinic at Birtley Medical Centre in Birtley, England, is very varied. Patients range widely in age, and have a considerable number of different conditions. Some require their blood to be monitored because they suffer from atrial fibrillation, while others are being treated with long-term anticoagulants because they have had a tricuspid valve replacement or have suffered a deep-vein thrombosis. Staff at the clinic also make home visits.

Adopting feminist strategies to improve women's health

Article Abstract:

Community nurses in the UK have the potential to play an important role in improving the standard of health care for women. Community nursing is still controlled by a male-dominated political and health care system, and only a feminist approach to community nursing practice will help to bring improvements. It may be appropriate for community nurses to focus on ways of becoming involved in collective action to help women to deal with the challenges they face.
