The prevalence and spectrum of alpha and beta thalassaemia in Guangdong Province: implications for the future health burden and population screening

Article Abstract:

The study showed that there was a high prevalence of carriers of alpha thalassaemia (8.53%), beta thalassaemia (2.54%), and both alpha and beta thalassaemia (0.26%) in the Guangdong Province of China. The details obtained from this study enabled the projected number of pregnancies at risk to be estimated and a screening strategy to be designed for the control of thalassaemia in this area.

COX-2 dependent PGE2 downregulates alpha integrin expression via the EP3 receptor in cultured mesangial cells

Article Abstract:

A study is made to find whether the effect mediated by prostaglandin E2(PGE2) acting throyugh its EP2 receptor in cultured rat mesangial cells. It is seen in glomerulonephritis, cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) appears to suppress the expression of alpha integrins by the increased production of prostaglandin E2 activating its EP3 receptor.
