The private practice of nursing: the gift of entrereneurialism

Article Abstract:

A nurse who is also an entrepreneur finds extended opportunities and ways to use creativity. Now in the role of every nurse characteristics that contribute to private practice are expected. Growth of nurses and their practice can be helped by understanding what being an entrepreneur offers according to Tim Porter-O'Grady, a consultant in private practice. In any career the secret is seeing opportunity early enough to take full advantage of it in a timely and meaningful fashion. Opportunity does not wait and skills must be in place in advance.

After a merger: the dilemma of the best leadership approach for nursing

Article Abstract:

A case study is presented that provides examples of the difficulties faced by nurse leaders in attempting to make a hospital system merger work. The advantages and disadvantages of three leadership alternatives are discussed. The three approaches are creating a single executive position for nursing in the system, decentralizing system management for patient services to each member hospital and eliminating hierarchy by designing services along a variety of service continua.

Over the horizon: the future and the advanced practice nurse

Article Abstract:

The role of the advanced practice nurse (APN) is becoming larger as healthcare services change. The focus is more on reducing costs and increasing efficiency and the workplace is becoming less centralized. Healthcare will depend more on where the provider is than where a hospital or clinic is. As this happens, primary care fields such as health services for children, the aged, women, and families will move APNs much more fully into the role of primary providers.
