A comparison of symptoms after the consumption of milk or lactose-hydrolyzed milk by people with self-reported severe lactose intolerance

Article Abstract:

People who believe they are severely lactose-intolerant may incorrectly think that their gastrointestinal symptoms are caused by lactose. These people may be able to consume up to 8 oz of milk per day, without using lactose-digestive aids. Of 30 subjects who classified themselves as severely lactose-intolerant, 9 were able to absorb lactose, based on the levels of hydrogen in their breath after consuming 50 g of lactose. Each of the 30 subjects consumed 8 oz of milk for 1 week and 8 oz of lactose-hydrolyzed milk for 1 week. Each day, the subjects rated the following symptoms on a scale of 0 to 5: diarrhea, stomach pain, bloating, and flatulence. The average ratings ranged between 0.1 and 1.2. There was no significant difference in symptoms in response to untreated milk and treated milk.

Exercise intolerance due to mutations in the cytochrome b gene of mitochondrial DNA

Article Abstract:

Exercise intolerance may be caused by a mutation in the mitochondrial gene for cytochrome b. Cytochrome b is part of a group of enzymes called respiratory-chain complex III, which occurs in muscles. A study of five patients with exercise intolerance and evidence of complex III deficiency in their muscles revealed that each patient had a gene mutation in cytochrome b. Since their mothers did not have the mutation, it must have occurred spontaneously and was not inherited. Each patient had a different mutation although most involved a substitution of adenine for guanine.
