Luis Serrano resigned as head of the Spanish National Cancer Center's (CNIO) structural and computational biology program complaining of Barbacid's 'abuses of authority', 'excessive hierarchization' and 'narrow scientific vision'. Barbacid's personality has led to several clashes with policy makers and scientists in Spain.

Sacked Spanish oncologists win reprieve

Eight scientists at Barcelona's Oncology Research Institute who were given three months to leave have been given another year to improve their performance. They were initially targeted by a panel of cancer experts because they produced few results and had few research grants.
