The role of health in New York State under the governorship of Hugh Carey

Article Abstract:

Former New York Congressman Hugh L. Carey was elected Governor of New York State in 1974. He came at a time when the city was experiencing serious financial crisis. Carey and his staff restructured the state's health care system which accounted for 22% of the budget. He formed the Health Planning Commission which organized the disparate health programs of New York. Carey was able to stress fiscal savings while improving health, mental health and human services in the state.
