New breast-feeding standards used as tool of change

Article Abstract:

The Midwifery Standards Group at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, England, has written 14 standards since its establishment in 1991, the first of which involved breast-feeding. It was decided to concentrate on the correct positioning of the baby at the breast, partly in the belief that this would reduce many breast-feeding related problems. The first breast-feeding audit revealed a need to address certain areas of practice, while a second audit carried out the following year showed that there had been improvements.

New breast biopsy technique improves patient care

Article Abstract:

The use of stereotactic breast biopsy equipment is being pioneered at the Castle Hill Hospital, Yorkshire, UK, in an attempt to save women from undergoing invasive surgery to detect breast cancer. Patients have reacted favourably to the use of stereotactic breast biopsy assessment, because it reduces the need for a general anaesthetic and overnight stay, as well as scarring which may occur after surgery. The biopsy is carried out in a prone position allowing the radiography more space in which to work.
