The role of oxytocin receptors and vasopressin V1a receptors in uterine contractions in rats: implications for tocolytic therapy with oxytocin antagonists

Article Abstract:

Oxytocin receptors in the uterus may play a major role in stimulating uterine contractions during labor. Researchers measured the uterine-contracting action of oxytocin and of arginine vasopressin before and after administering drugs that block oxytocin receptors. Oxytocin receptors work with arginine vasopressin to effect contractions in the uterus. Oxytocin-blocking drugs given to prevent labor may be contraindicated because they would also block the body's ability to modulate blood pressure in response to hemorrhage. Hemorrhage occurs frequently during labor

Oxytocin receptors in bovine cervix during pregnancy and parturition: gene expression and cellular localization

Article Abstract:

Oxytocin may play a role in preparing the cervix to labor. Oxytocin's primary function is causing labor contractions. Researchers periodically measured the amounts of messenger RNA (mRNA) encoding for oxytocin receptors and the amount of oxytocin receptor protein in the cervixes of pregnant cows. Amounts of mRNA and oxytocin receptor protein were low during pregnancy. Amounts of both increased toward the end of pregnancy and went up markedly at the time of labor. Oxytocin is known to stimulate the secretion of prostaglandin E2, which softens the cervix.

Role of oxytocin in the initiation of term and preterm labor in rats: changes in oxytocin receptor density and plasma oxytocin concentration and the effect of an oxytocin antagonist, L-366,509

Article Abstract:

The drug L-366,509 prevented premature labor in a study of pregnant rats. This drug blocks the receptor for oxytocin, a hormone involved in labor.
