The role of physicians in the future of quality management

Article Abstract:

Physicians need to develop new skills and create new alliances to make sure their voices are heard in the debate on quality management in health care. Several organizations have developed reporting systems that can issue report cards on specific hospitals and physicians. This is done in an effort to improve the quality of health care. It also helps the purchasers of health care plans to choose the plan best suited to their members. Many scientific disciplines are used to evaluate these systems as well as the measures taken to improve health care. Physicians should accept any measures that can be scientifically proved to be effective.

Quality of care - what is it?

Article Abstract:

Physicians need to take an active role in the current debate over the quality of health care. A good start would be to come up with a workable definition of quality. This varies depending on who is defining quality. In 1984, the American Medical Association defined quality medical care as that which maintains or improves the duration or quality of life. The Institute of Medicine defines quality medical care as that which meets the expectations of patients. Managed care organizations define quality of medical care as that which meets the needs of a group of enrollees.

The origins of the quality-of-care debate

Article Abstract:

Many doctors and patients are afraid that cost-cutting measures will compromise patient care. However, quality assurance experts claim that cost-reduction and positive patient outcomes can co-exist. Clinical epidemiology has discovered wide regional variations in patient outcomes. This can be used to identify techniques that produce the best outcomes. Outcomes research itself has improved greatly. Computers have made it easier to analyze huge databases of clinical data. More research is needed on the impact of managed care on patient outcomes.
