The screening imperative for ophthalmic care in diabetes

Article Abstract:

The growing number of people suffering from diabetes mellitus in the UK means there is a strong case for setting up a national retinopathy screening programme to detect diabetic eye disease. The direct health cost of diabetes is at least 4% of the NHS budget, with complications such as blindness proving especially expensive. A national screening programme could help detect diabetic eye disease at an earlier stage, which would lead to cost-savings as well as helping to improve the patient's quality of life.

Problems and procedures of day-case angiography

Article Abstract:

Day-care angiography examinations are becoming more popular in the UK health service, due mainly to cost savings and the ease with which the procedure is performed. People with suspected heart problems are given an cardiac catheterization which isolates the arteries ready for an injection of radiopaque medium, which shows up on an angiogram. The special dye shows where there are any obstructions in the heart. Patients must be properly assessed for their suitability for day-care treatment.
