The secret ingredient

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to assess how nurses cope with the emotional demands of their profession. Researchers interviewed 20 nurses and 23 patients and it became clear that nurses adopt various strategies to help them cope. Some avoid specialisms, such as oncology, which may be distressing. Others forget about work when they are off-duty or do exercise or sport to take their mind off their problems. Some nurses vent their anger on their families because they have had to bottle it up at work, or else they seek support from understanding colleagues.
