The voices of reason

Article Abstract:

Two UK mental health charity workers have produced a workbook for use by people hearing voices as a symptom of schizophrenia. The workbook encourages patients to identify the voices they hear, and work with them, as a means of controlling the voices. The technique differs from traditional mental health practice which requires professionals to deny patients' experiences as unreal. The authors, a schizophrenic and a psychiatric nurse, see the book as complementary to existing therapies. They stress that medication helps some patients, but that the schizophrenia recovery rate has remained static at 33% since the 1950s.

Schizophrenia: knowledge for practice

Article Abstract:

Schizophrenia is a complex concept and there is a debate as to how far there is an overlap with other metal disorders. Some people are more likely to become schizophrenics, and there is a link with social deprivation. Some 33% of patients experience a complete recovery while from 10% to 15% develop serious long term disability. Male drug users who have experienced problems in adolescence have a poorer prognosis. Families tend to provide most care for schizophrenics.

Strategies for managing auditory hallucinations

Article Abstract:

Auditory hallucinations commonly start very suddenly, causing great anxiety and fear. They can be a sign of mental disorder, but this is not always the case. Attacks can be eliminated with neuroleptics, but in many cases this treatment is not effective. Research is now focusing on developing non-medical interventions to help people suffering from auditory hallucinations.
