The young ones: teenagers in hospital

Article Abstract:

Only 8% of UK health authorities operate a policy of dedicated care for adolescents in 1998, despite teenagers often having very specific needs when being treated in hospital. Privacy is an important issue when treating teenagers, although most children's wards provide very little in the way of private space. Adult wards are usually too restrictive, with the average age of a patient being 70 years-old. Teenagers benefit both psychologically and physically from being with children of their own age.

Foreign affairs

Article Abstract:

Unison, UK trade union, has produced guidelines on the recruitment and management of foreign nurses in the UK. The guidelines call for good induction and provision of information for overseas nurses, fair grading and pay. Some UK hospital trusts, such as Southmead Hospital, Bristol, are keen to recruit from abroad, whilst others, such as Sandwell Healthcare NHS Trust, West Bromwich, believe in concentrating resources on local recruitment campaigns.
