Think ahead to minimize risks of midwifery care: obstetrics is responsible for a high proportion of damage claims

Article Abstract:

The midwife plays an important part in the provision of maternity care and is often the lead professional in home births. Obstetrics represents the largest amounts of legal claims made and this often leads to a reactive approach to obstetric risk. However higher quality care, and the control of risks can be achieved by a more proactive approach to case management. The article divides risk factors into direct and indirect categories and looks at the effects of each on midwifery care. It also takes into account communication issues which can cause friction between professionals, and the reporting of incidents.

Obstacles to using a database in midwifery

Article Abstract:

Midwifery units in Scotland failed to make efficient use of the Cochrane childbirth and pregnancy disk-based database even though they acknowledged the importance of research to clinical practice. Just 28% of 608 midwives surveyed claimed to regularly use the Cochrane database, although 69% claimed to use a computer at work each day. Some managers and midwives reported difficulties in gaining access to the computer or found it difficult to locate the required information through lack of skills or confidence. Others were unable to familiarise themselves with the database because of time constraints.
