Thomas Frieden

Article Abstract:

Thomas Frieden, New York's health commissioner set out to change things by establishing centers in parts of the city with the worst health outcome with his characteristic directness. He banned smoking in public places, resulting in 200,000 less smokers, launched a controversial scheme to begin monitoring the blood sugar level of diabetics, retained focus on infectious diseases, distributed greater number of clean syringes and condoms and advocated for HIV tests to become a part of routine medical care.

DDT returns

Article Abstract:

Dichloro-diphenyl-trichloro ethane (DDT) is set to be reintroduced into countries like Africa that have tried, and failed, to win the fight against malaria, after decades of being marginalized as a dangerous pesticide. DDT, hitherto linked to various illnesses based on unconvincing and inconsistent data, has even managed to obtain the approval of its critics who agree that DDT's benefits far outweigh the risks.
