Thoughts from the transition zone

Article Abstract:

The kinds of feelings and emotions are described that doctors and relatives of patients experience, both in the donor zone and the recipient zone, when a heart is transplanted from a teenager who had died in an accident in the donor zone to another needy teenager in the recipient zone. The transition zone in such a case is important, requiring speedy air travel, with pilots to transport the organ and the doctors safely from zone to zone in a time frame that will allow the heart to recover without damage.

Ethical challenges posed by the solicitation of deceased and living organ donors

Article Abstract:

The medical, ethical and public policy issues that are involved in solicitation of deceased and living organ donors are discussed. A clear policy should be developed for defining the preexisting emotional relationships that are acceptable and the final rule, which technically permits any directed donation of deceased-donor organs to a named person, should be amended to be consistent with this new policy.
